Want to write an RPG, but aren't sure where to start? This is the group for you!

What is the workshop?

RPG Writer Workshop is a pilot program intended to help aspiring RPG authors write their first game throughout the month of July. The goal is to have a draft of a one-shot adventure completed by the end of the month.

WHAT DOES THE WORKSHOP ENTAIL?

  • Emails containing actionable lessons regarding writing processes, tools and resources, game design, playtesting, and more;
  • Access to a vault of resources for your project(s);
  • Directed roundtable discussions held on Discord;
  • A 24/7 live chat on Discord with other workshop participants.

What do I have to do?

All you have to do is:

  • Have an idea for a one-shot RPG you'd like to write;
  • Join the Discord channel;
  • Sign up with your email so you can get the weekly prompts and resources.

That's it!

Do I have to write an RPG for Dungeons & Dragons?

Absolutely not! That just happens to be my particular favorite ruleset, but you are welcome to participate regardless of your chosen ruleset.

Does it cost anything?

No! In the future I may be developing a more thorough, structured e-course, but that won't be happening for a while. This is a chance to see how the RPG writing community can be better supported, and you will not be prompted or expected to purchase anything.

SCHEDULE (subject to change)

This workshop coincides with National Novel Writing Month's summer writing challenge, Camp NaNoWriMo. Since a one-shot RPG typically has fewer than 50,000 words, our proposed schedule is a bit different. These dates are recommendations for how you should progress through your project throughout the month. They are not specific to time zone, nor are you "required" to participate during these set dates. It's just to help you plan out your work!

  • July 1 - 5: Getting ready and gathering inspiration

  • July 6 - 10: Researching, Outlining and Planning

  • July 11 - 20: Writing Writing Writing!

  • July 21 - 27: Revising and Troubleshooting

  • July 28 - 31: Learning How to Playtest

*You may be wondering, "Why no designing?" I feel that when you are first crafting your adventure, much of that comes last because you won't want to make any "permanent" decisions for an in-progress story. We can certainly chat more about that in the Discord channel, and I'll be sharing some helpful templates and design resources with you!

Who am I?

roundBW.png

I'm Ashley Warren — a former college English teacher, journalist, magazine editor, and literacy research academic who now works as a content strategist and writes bestselling RPGs for Dungeon Masters Guild (and beyond!). My weird background in writing, editing, teaching, and usability research has provided me with a strange but useful approach to writing RPGs. I know what it's like to be daunted by the writing process, and I'm here to help. I've worked with hundreds of writers all over the world!

Check out some of my adventures!
